Phase II - Pediatric ICU
Phase III - Neo-Natal Care, Respiratory Therapy
Design Theme: Endangered Species Animals, Undersea Adventure
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina

The Challenges:
Integration of Two Design Themes Into One Cohesive Concept
Providing Continuity of Design Throughout All Phases
Minimal Ceiling Heights Available
Donor Furnished Fish Aquarium To Be Located Prominently
Client Requested a “Learning Component” Within the Concept

The Solutions:
Utilized Carpet to Depict Land and Water for Setting of Themes; All Fish and Animals Are Endangered Species
Adapted the Two-Dimensional Wall Graphics To Be Used In ICU, Nurseries; Integrating the Concept with Product Design, i.e. Patient Sheets, Meal Tray Liners, Ceiling Tiles
Coordinated Closely with Local Authorities to Meet Codes and Create Viable Wall Graphics
Designed Fish Aquarium In Wall Between Main Corridor and Central Playroom, Utilizing Fire Glass On Either Side to Meet Code Requirements
Provided 10 “Fun Facts” Graphics Components Intermittently Down the Corridors; Carolinas Medical Center Staff Are Able to Insert New Facts As Often As Desired

The Outcome:
Dr. Nurkin, the hospital administrator, and the marketing staff at Carolinas Medical Center believe that they are able to provide the children and the families of their community a fun environment to heal in. The administrative staff used the Children’s Hospital design concept to launch a marketing campaign to further promote the services that were already widely acclaimed in the Charlotte area.
