Practical Design for Special Needs

Special needs of the visually impaired and memory-impaired residents are top priorities in our interior designs. For the visually impaired, we provide well-lit spaces because they are perceived as friendlier in their world. Subtle floor material changes, as opposed to dramatic differences in color, help them to predict their movements more gracefully. This creates surroundings that promote confidence of mobility and greater activity.

With our experience in planning and designing Alzheimer’s facilities, we have learned from administrators, geriatric physicians, nurses and employees that the memory-impaired individual is still active, but needs additional cues and information to assist them in making choices. In addition, anyone with dementia can see color and pattern, but the color is less intense and perceived on a gray scale. This is all information that we reference when designing these facilities.
